Seven months after winning the Kentucky Derby this year, Medina Spirit died after a workout at Santa Anita Racetrack in southern California today.
The death also came after extensive testing proved that Beta-Methasone found in the Derby winner came from topical cream, not injection.
A Kentucky veterinarian said the racing industry drug testing process in not fair.
A full autopsy report is forthcoming.
Medina Spirit’s trainer, Bob Baffert, has come into disrepute due to illegal drug levels found in various horses managed by him over the years.
From 2011-2013, seven of Baffert’s horses died on California racetracks.
The overall number of deaths, especially in California, left the horse industry gasping for an explanation, challenged to save the sport itself.
Horse industry is the number one economic power in Kentucky.
