149th Run for the Roses Safer for Horses & Jockeys by Churchill Downs Decision

Sudden Deaths of Three Horses

at Churchill Downs; Two of

Saffie Joseph, Jr.’s Days Prior
to 149th Kentucky Derby

5/04/2023 COMMENTARY

Churchill Downs cares about thoroughbred race horses and has done the right thing by suspending trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., due to sudden deaths of two horses on the downs race track in Louisville, Ky., days prior to running the 149th Kentucky Derby.

Should horses drop dead in route to the finish line, it is a great threat to other thoroughbreds who may not have time to steer clear of a carcass on a charging race track.

Lives of Jockeys and Thoroughbred horses must be and are being protected in the unusual case presented here.
