Louisville, Ky., Churchill Downs News
The Kentucky legislature passed a bill permitting online sports wagering this year.
Information about wagering on the Kentucky Derby is available from the official web site of Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky.
Scores of fans have erroneously presumed the Derby is held in Lexington, booking hotel rooms and then finding out they have to drive about 100 miles to the northwest to get to Louisville on the Ohio river at the border of Indiana.
Expect very long lines on the Waterson Expressway exit leading to Churchill Downs.
Residents of neighborhoods near the entrance to Churchill Downs often rent parking spaces in their yards; but, those choice spots go to early birds, so plan ahead.
Plan to pay $100 or more for such out-of-the-fray spots within walking distance with a greater opportunity to egress the derby quickly to avoid traffic jams.
Check sites like Better Business Bureau, Yelp.com; and, Google Reviews for inside tips from people who have attended past events like the Kentucky Derby.
Enjoy Lexington if You Came to the Wrong Place
Lexington is the home of Keeneland (4201 Versailles Rd., across from Bluegrass Airport) and Red Mile (1200 Red Mile Road at intersection of South Broadway) – both are historical race tracks.
Keeneland may offer a special televised viewing of the Kentucky Derby for those who do not want to travel to Louisville, choosing instead to avoid massive traffic jams and overpriced parking fees.
Lexington has:
- one of the most educated populations in the nation;
- many NGO nonprofits that offer art and science experiences like the Kentucky Aviation Museum adjacent to Bluegrass Airport;
- unrivalled horse farm scenery; and,
- the Metro-Plex probably rivals Paris, France in the number of cuisine opportunities – excessive number of fine restaurants with world-class chefs, like Azur Restaurant and Patio, 3070 Lakecrest Circle, in the posher Beaumont subdivision.
- many other amenities.
We Love Louisville Too
Louisville has a rich history as a former music city notorious for Big Band, much like Nashville, Tn., is now for country music. That era wanned as tastes in music styles shifted to new genres.
Louisville also features several local universities with national reputations including UL’s Jarvik heart transplant research as well as unparalleled medical specialists in surgery of the hand.
Both the University of Kentucky in Lexington and University of Louisville are notorious for various sports teams, especially the UK Wildcats and UL Cardinals.
Louisville also has many other amenities like the world-class Louisville-Slugger plant which makes historical baseball bats for all levels of the sport.
